Proper string installation is imperative to the playability of your instrument. Incorrectly installed, a string can slip and cause your instrument to continually go out of tune.
Begin at the bridge, the lower end of your instrument, where the string is strung. The bridge end is always strung before the string posts at the neck. Bring the string up the center of the instrument, up over the nut, and to the post desired. Feed the string through the hole or slot in the post, then around the upper side of the post, slip under the string, and back around the post. This will cause the string to lock itself against the post as you tighten the string by turning the tuning key and prevent slippage.
Make sure the string is positioned in the slots of the bridge and the nut.
